The harmonic chant
remained very popular in Central Asia among
the shepherds and the people of Altaï bus very narrowly connected to the
practices animists and chamanic, of the vocal traditions which influenced those
of the Buddhist sung prayers thereafter. Many are the legends which circulate on
its origins.
Mongolian says that
several varieties of birds produce sounds of throat: the bittern, a heron of
rather large size, when it plunges its head under water emits a similar sound;
the crane that the tradition makes live three thousand years has a particular
song which, when it is heard, is regarded as one predicts long life; the rustle
produced by the wings of the “cock of snow”, a bird very running in particular
in the areas of the lakes, resembles appears it with this song. It song of throat
(xöömii) is sometimes called “the echo of the voice” or “the echo of the
bird” by wandering Mongolian who dialogues naturally with the forces of the
spirits.

Legendary also are the
rivers and the cascades which produce various combinations of sounds according
to types' of stones on which they frayent a way, each one being symbolically
representative of a different overtone. The Eev river and its water falls would
be at the origin of xöömii. Although Mongolian knows his name in general,
they say not to be able to indicate its exact site. In the past, the old ones
had habit to say that they wished to drink of its water before dying and that
the beings which had been born close to its banks became excellent singers very
enduring and having a nobility of soul.
